Methodical design for products your customers will treasure

Mystery Form is an industrial design studio led by Tristan Cannan in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Our clients vary in size, geography, and product category, yet one commonality stands out — their care for their customers.

We care about your customers too. Every product we work on is designed to:

Enable, express, & endure.

Enable, express, & endure.

Enable, express, & endure. Enable, express, & endure.

Enable

UX, or User Experience, is important for all product design, both digital and physical. Products are built around people and the world they live in. Understanding people’s abilities, their environments, and their activities gives us actionable insights to design around.

Express

It’s hard to describe art.. and maybe that’s why it’s one of Mystery Form’s favorite things to do. When we know our user and their environment, we can pin point which aesthetic themes are appropriate from an otherwise infinite pool of visual possibilities.

Endure

Manufacturability is central to every design we propose. Not only in what is possible, but also in what is responsible. We build quality products that serve your customers today and well into the future.

What’s it like to work with us?

“I found Tristan through a founder in my network - he was extremely professional from the very beginning. Communication was easy and straightforward, and every concern I had was immediately addressed. The quality and speed of Tristan’s execution was impressive; he managed to bring my ideas to life and create realistic mockups of the finished product that I was extremely happy with. I very much enjoyed working with Tristan and hope to do so again in the future.”

— Gilad Rom, Founder @ Huan

"Tristan has been a delight to work with. He has brought a thoughtful and process driven approach to industrial design and product development. I've learned a tremendous amount from watching him conceptualize and work through design challenges and I look forward to continued collaborations."

— Juan Sanabria, Owner @ GuideOne Mobile

"I had a great time working with Tristan. He took the time to ask all the right questions and made sure he really understood what we were trying to design. I loved the iterative process and how great he was at taking my input and feedback. After a bunch of hard work and iteration we landed on something I'm extremely happy with."

FAQs

  • Industrial designers make mass-produced products look good, feel good, and work well.

  • Industrial design is the intersection of art, engineering, and psychology.

Many people are needed to make physical products. A pair of headphones turns data into sound thanks to an electrical engineer. A mechanical engineer makes the electronics, plastic parts, and everything else fit together perfectly.

It’s the industrial designer’s job understand the headphone brand’s customers, and to imagine a pair that are irresistible to them.

These customers will find the headphones align perfectly with their style and aesthetic tastes. Their specific needs (e.g. adjustability, portability, comfort etc…) are identified and solved for. Using the headphones is effortless, because every scenario the user finds themself in has been planned for.

The industrial designer considers every angle of the product’s space, and synthesizes all this data into designs that can be evaluated visually and physically, and when the final design is chosen, can be manufactured and put in the hands of millions.

  • Every product starts as an idea — an idea with an infinite amount of ways it could take shape. Mystery Form follows a framework of steps to gradually narrow in on the best ideas, and eventually arrive on the best possible embodiment of your product vision.

  • It depends!

How complicated is your product idea? If electronics are involved, do you know the specific components you will be using? Will your product live on a bookshelf or be worn on a body?

To get from an idea to a final design will typically take between 1-3 months minimum. However, there is a period of a few months to a few years where the design will be critically evaluated by engineers and manufacturers, and adjustments will need to be made. We strongly prefer to be CCed in on these conversations and are able to consult as needed to ensure the design intent we establish together is carried through into mass-production.

  • Let’s hop on a call and find out!

In our experience, it’s never too early to start to investigate and strategize, especially before you begin any heavy engineering efforts.

Perhaps you had a great idea for a handheld flashlight and the engineering team is almost done! What if your target users only use headlamps?

Maybe for your revolutionary IoT product you’ve finished your circuit board, and.. it happens to be a square. Let’s hope your customers weren’t in the mood for a circle.

Industrial design can help you steer your efforts in the right direction early on, even if that means we don’t begin the actual design work until weeks or months later.

  • Yes!

While Mystery Form focuses solely on industrial design, we have worked with numerous engineers and vendors through the years. Whatever your needs are, we’ll go out of our way to introduce you to a professional who can provide for them.
